  Report:

Dr. Carolyn Whitzman’s presentation outlined the GLOVE project which is working with four Australian local governments (one inner suburb, one outer suburb, one regional centre, and one rural municipality) to develop integrated violence prevention in both public and private space, using a gender-conscious process and a community-government partnership model. The project is part of a set of international projects linked by the organization, Women in Cities International. The project is based on the concern that present research and policy aimed at reducing violence in the public and private realms is disconnected.

The presentation provided the background to the work, including the policy constraints and opportunities to develop gender- mainstreamed integrated violence prevention at the local level. For Dr Whitzman, the challenge is to create safer physical, social, and institutional environments, promote full participation in community life, pursue partnerships between community organizations and local governments, involve the full diversity of residents in local decision-making processes, and evaluate the impact of policies and programs.
