The Action Research Project is based on the interview method. To make the Action Research Team conversant with the techniques of conducting interview at a professional level, PUKAR had invited Mr. Niloo Damle, a veteran journalist, to conduct a workshop on interviewing skills. This was done on November 27, 2007 at the YWCA. Indrani Dasgupta, the Research coordinator of the project helped Damle to conduct the workshop.
Niloo Damle began the workshop with a slide presentation which showed pictures of different people across the globe whom he has interviewed and in between he gave a presentation on how to develop the art of conducting an interview. He also laid a strong emphasis on interviewer having prior knowledge about the subject, which he called having "domain knowledge".
In the second half of the session Mr. Damle conducted an exercise which was based on role play, where he acted as the moderator. Overall the workshop went well and the Action Research Team members who attended the workshop have benefited from it.

Under the auspice of the Youth & Governance Project, two separate community events were held. The first event was held on November 25, 2007 at 4:30 PM at the Raju Kamathi Chawl located in the Ghodapadeo area in Girangaon while the other was held on December 25, 2007 at the Rawaji Sakpal Chawl in Fer Bunder.
The principle idea behind these events was to create a trilateral dialogue between PUKAR Youth Researchers, community citizens and the local ward representatives. Advocate Mangesh Bansod, the corporator was present at both events. There was an active participation of the women in large numbers at both the events. They raised some important questions related to the water supply in terms of quality, timing, pressure, duration etc. The women shared heart wrenching stories with the corporator regarding all these issues and created a meaningful dialogue. The corporator answered some of the questions and promised to bring about some improvements in the current water situation.
Under this project, such dialogues will continue in many other areas like Kaula Bunder community where the PUKAR researchers are currently conducting a survey. |

Visit by Ravina Aggarwal, Program Officer, Ford Foundation Date: 12th December, 2007 |

|
The Girangaon trip started with a walk through the erstwhile mill areas of Mumbai and a visit to the chawls that are being transformed into mass-housing projects. The youth fellows leading this dimension of the project have been involved in studying their neighbourhood for several years now and answered many questions
In an email sent to PUKAR after the visit, this is what Ravina Aggarwal had to say about her experience:
“Very often, academic ideas for change remain abstract and unrealized but your team has really demonstrated how research can be unhinged from its elite and isolated status without losing the intensity of analysis.”
